SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son is reportedly planning to borrow $16 billion to invest in AI, according to sources familiar with the matter. The Japanese technology investor may also borrow an additional $8 billion in early 2026. This move follows SoftBank’s earlier talks to invest up to $25 billion in ChatGPT owner OpenAI. The company has already committed $15 billion to Stargate, a joint venture by Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank aimed at investing up to $500 billion to maintain the U.S.’s lead in the global AI race. The venture was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, SoftBank’s Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison at the White House.
