Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei are scheduled to hold a press briefing at 5 p.m. local time in Taipei. The presidential office announced the event via a text message but did not provide details on the topic.

The briefing comes shortly after TSMC, the world’s leading producer of AI chips, revealed plans to invest an additional $100 billion in its US facilities. This expansion aligns with President Donald Trump’s initiative to increase domestic manufacturing. Any further US investment by TSMC will require approval from Taiwan’s government.

Economic Minister Kuo Jyh-Huei has downplayed concerns that the expanded investment plans may “Americanize” the chip-maker. “TSMC already has plants in the US and Japan, and it’s now building a new plant in Germany,” Kuo told reporters. “These have nothing to do with tariffs. TSMC’s global expansion is a crucial development.”
