Chevron Partners with Engine No. 1 and GE Vernova to Power U.S. Data Centers with Natural Gas
Energy major Chevron announced on Tuesday a significant collaboration with investment firm Engine No. 1 and GE Vernova to construct natural gas-based power plants for co-located data centers across the U.S. This strategic move comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump disclosed a private sector investment of up to $500 billion aimed at funding infrastructure for artificial intelligence, seeking to lead the global race in this critical technology.
The project, leveraging GE Vernova’s natural gas turbines, is set to deliver up to 4 gigawatts of power—sufficient to meet the energy needs of approximately 3 million homes—to data centers in the U.S. Southeast, Midwest, and West regions. Initially, the power generated will not be integrated into the existing transmission grid. However, the design of these projects includes the capability to sell surplus power, ensuring cost efficiency and supporting broader energy demands.
Chevron anticipates the commencement of initial services by the end of 2027, with the potential for project expansion beyond the initial 4-GW capacity. Chevron’s CEO, Mike Wirth, emphasized the company’s confidence in investing in these projects, attributing it to President Trump’s pro-American energy policies and commitment to energy and AI dominance. These projects are also expected to incorporate lower carbon capture and storage technologies and renewable energy resources, aligning with broader sustainability goals.
This initiative not only promises to create American jobs and bolster national security but also positions Chevron at the forefront of integrating renewable and sustainable energy solutions in the data center sector.
