Oracle Corp. is considering a proposal to acquire TikTok’s US operations, offering security assurances and a small stake in a new American entity. This plan would potentially leave the app’s algorithm under Chinese control. The proposal, circulated within the Trump administration, involves Oracle working with US buyers to ensure user data safety, including preventing backdoor access by China’s government. With less than three weeks to reach a deal to avoid a TikTok ban, Oracle’s plan aims to satisfy national security concerns while allowing TikTok to continue operating in the US. Oracle already collaborates with TikTok on securing US user data through Project Texas. The proposal is tentative and requires approval from Trump, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, and the Chinese government. Publicly known bidders include groups led by Frank McCourt, Alexis Ohanian, Jesse Tinsley, and MrBeast, as well as a merger offer by Perplexity AI. Microsoft is also considered a potential bidder. Oracle’s previous attempt to acquire TikTok in 2020 failed due to legal challenges and the Covid-19 pandemic. The current discussions are overseen by Vice President JD Vance and his advisers, with National Security Advisor Mike Waltz involved. Vance expects a “high-level agreement” to create a secure, American-operated TikTok.
